What You Need Before Starting
Before you begin the CBRIS registration process, gather the documents and information you will need. Having everything ready prevents delays and reduces the chance of your application being rejected or returned for corrections. The CBRIS system validates your information in real time, so errors or missing details will block your submission.
- National Identity Card (NID) for sole traders or directors
- Proof of address: utility bill or bank statement dated within 3 months
- Proposed business name (check availability first)
- Description of business activities (be specific but broad enough for future growth)
- For companies: details of all directors and shareholders
- For companies: Memorandum and Articles of Association
- Payment method: credit card or MauCas for government fees
Step 1: Create Your CBRIS Account
Visit cbris.govmu.org and click on Create Account. You will need your National Identity Card number and a valid email address. The system sends a verification link to your email, which you must click within 24 hours to activate your account. Once activated, you can log in with your NID number and chosen password. If you already have a TAN (Tax Account Number) from the MRA, you can use those credentials to log in as well.
Step 2: Reserve Your Business Name
Name reservation is the first formal step in the registration process. The fee is Rs 1,000, and the reservation is valid for 6 months (extended from 3 months in the 2026 Budget). You can search the CBRIS database to check if your preferred name is available before paying. Names that are identical or too similar to existing registered businesses will be rejected. The system allows you to submit up to 3 alternative names in order of preference.

Step 3: Complete the Registration Forms

Private limited companies need Form 7 (application for incorporation) and Form 9 (declaration of compliance). Partnerships complete Form 1A. All forms are available digitally within CBRIS, and the system guides you through each section with help text and validation rules.
Step 4: Pay Government Fees
Government fees vary by business structure. Sole proprietorships pay approximately Rs 400 for the BRN certificate. Private limited companies pay around Rs 4,950, which includes the incorporation fee and name reservation. Payment is made online via credit card or MauCas (QR code or internet banking). The CBRIS system generates a payment confirmation that you should save for your records.
Step 5: Receive Your Certificate
Once your application is submitted and payment is confirmed, the CBRD processes your registration. Standard processing takes 3 working days for a BRN certificate. If your application is complete and all documents are in order, you can download an electronic certificate of incorporation and your Business Registration Card directly from the CBRIS portal. The BRN is the unique identifier that follows your business through all dealings with the MRA, banks, and government agencies.
