VAT tax documents and calculator for Mauritian business

VAT (Value Added Tax) is one of the most important tax obligations for businesses in Mauritius. Understanding when you need to register and how to file returns can save you from penalties and help you manage your cash flow better.

When Must You Register for VAT?

VAT registration is mandatory when your annual turnover exceeds Rs 10 million. However, you can register voluntarily if your turnover is below this threshold, which can be beneficial if you deal with other VAT-registered businesses.

How to Register for VAT

  • Complete the VAT registration form (VAT 1)
  • Submit your Business Registration Card
  • Provide proof of business address
  • Submit to the MRA Large Taxpayer Division
  • Processing time: 2-3 weeks

Filing Your VAT Returns

VAT returns must be filed monthly or quarterly depending on your turnover. The deadline is 21 days after the end of each tax period. Late filing incurs penalties of Rs 1,000 per month.

Claiming Input Tax

You can claim input tax on business expenses, including office supplies, professional services, and business travel. Keep all receipts and ensure they show the supplier's TAN.
